Dr. Van Hilst brings an unusual depth and breadth of background to teaching, work, and research. An MIT graduate, he has 20 years of industry experience, in addition to his work in academia. He has worked in public administration and project management (City of Grinell, Iowa), astronomy (at Harvard and for NASA), geophysics (in Paris for the French government), corporate research (for HP Labs in Palo Alto), product development (for IBM in New York and recent start-ups), and teaching (at the University of Washington and Microsoft in Seattle, Miami Dade College, Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and Davie, and Nova Southeastern University at both graduate and undergraduate levels). He enjoys both the intellectual pursuit of knowledge, and the practical pursuit of making things work.
Dr. Van Hilst earned his PhD from the University of Washington. He has published more than 40 papers and has 1 patent. He is currently conducting research for Motorola. His research interests include information security, software engineering, business intelligence, project management, and process improvement.
