* PROTECTING YOUR ACCOUNT & HOMEPAGE *
************************************************************
1. PROBLEMS WITH UNIX, TELECOMMUNICATIONS & APPLICATIONS:
For any problem with Unix, telecommunications, and
applications (databases, languages, ...) you should
contact either:
a) Academic computing: The Help desk (login=help, or Bijan
Jamkhu (login=bijan).
b) SCIS Computer and Network services: Russell Splain
(login=splainr) or Frank Mitropoulos (login=mitrof).
You can reach them through NSU 1-800-986-2247 at the
following extensions:
* Help Desk: 475-7668
* Bijan Jamkhu: 370-5636
* Russell Splain: 476-1912
* Frank Mitropoulos: 452-5576
2. BACK-UP:
Make sure you keep a back-up copy on your PC of all the work
you are storing in your Unix account.
Some "hackers" destroyed recently two student accounts,
deleting all the files from their account. Although the
Alpha system is backed-up every night, the back-ups are
stored outside Nova, and the process of restoring an account
is always lengthy and painful.
Therefore, I would recommend that you create and back-up all
your projects on your PC before you upload them to your Unix
account, just in case an accident occurs!
In case of absolute necessity, if you want to have your
account restored, you will need to contact Bijan Jamkhu
(login=bijan), Academic computing services, providing him
with the date you are sure all your files were still there
(the last time you updated your account prior to its
destruction).
