APPENDIX A4

************************************************************
* STATIC VERSUS DYNAMIC COURSE OUTLINE *
************************************************************

Your course consists of two parts:

A. A static part, the course plan:

This is the course outline that I prepared before the
   course starts.

The course plan includes sections for the term schedule,
the grading strategy, assignment guidelines, textbooks
required, the course abstract in the SCIS catalog, the
course objectives and the online course tutorials.

The most important part of the course plan is the weekly
schedule of assignments. You should copy the weekly
schedule to your account so that it becomes, after some
editing, your own HTML home page. Directions are provided
   in Appendix B2.

B. A dynamic part:

This is the part of the course recording the progress you
will make as I teach the course.

As soon as I get your class list, the 'student project'
entry will provide access to the projects of each student
   enrolled in the class.

As soon as I receive a question from one of you, I will
post the question with my feedback in the entry called
   'daily e-mail'.

I will be recording our ECR's, and post them in the entry
   called 'ECRs'.

Whenever I wish to share with you a new idea, a comment
or an important feedback, I will post the idea in the
entry called 'Message of the Day'.

C. Access to previous courses:

I have taught for more than a year using Lynx and HTML,
building an educational 'knowledge base'.

To take advantage of this knowledge base, select the entry
called 'past research and teaching' activities, from either
my first or second level homepages, then access all 1995
and Winter 1996 master courses:

  * 1995 Master courses
  * 1996 Winter Master courses

You can also look at the entry called 'Student Project
Showroom'.

D. Class participation:

My objective is to achieve, in our online programs, the same
quality and contact level I provide in our traditional, on
campus classes.

In order to increase your level of participation, which
should happen from the moment you login to our systems to
the moment you logout of our systems, I strongly recommend
that you add, as the last line of your .login file, the
following line:

      /home/jclevin/MSG/msg

This will get you right in my homepage level 2, at the time
you login, where you can select your class and access all
the current online activities, for your class.
