The School of Computer and Information Sciences
		       offers graduate programs through telecommunications.
My role in the center is to:

DIRECT doctoral students through the dissertation
                       process.

TEACH in the areas of Database Management Systems,
		       Telecommunications and Computer Networks, Modelling
                       and Simulation, Mathematical Modelling, Optimization
                       Methods, Numerical Analysis, Statistics, Operations
Research, Systems Analysis and Design, Software
                       Engineering and Object-Oriented languages.

COURSES are taught using the online format, which
currently takes advantage of a formidable tele-
communication network between NSU and the student's
                       homes: The Internet.

In a joint effort with NSU Academic Computing services,
the SCIS center has been able to upgrade the mode of
delivery of its online programs (from VT-100, text-
based access) to a new level to:

                       a) provide PPP/SLIP connections from the student's home
                       b) access Nova new Sun stations in client/server mode
                       c) use a windows/graphics interface
                       d) provide shared graphics access
                       d) include an audio conferencing subsystem
                       e) create hypertext courseware
                       f) develop an instruction management system

The result has been an improvement in the monitoring
of student progress, an increased interaction between
instructors and students and among students.

                         CURRENT ONLINE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

BACKGROUND Organization of a research group (MECR), with
the mission to support the vision of making NSU
a leader in online, computer-based programs.

GOALS The overall, long range, project is to apply TQM
techniques to reengineer NSU online education
programs. My role is to coordinate the overall
effort, defining for each student a thesis topic,
then ensuring that each thesis will fit into the
overall research effort. In two years, four
                       projects were initiated:

PROJECT #1 The first project was to develop a Distance
Education Model on the Internet, where students
presented their projects using hypertext with
gateways to the Internet (1995 FETC conference)

PROJECT #2 The second project was to provide the students
with Online Instructions using a Multimedia
                       Toolset (1996 FETC conference).

PROJECT #3 The third project, called The Server-at-Home
project, will empower the students with full
control over the servers hosting their homepages
(to be presented at the 1996 IEEE conference).

PROJECT #4 The fourth project, called The CD-ROM with Link
to the Internet project, will add to a CD-ROM
training program a communication link over the
Internet with the Subject Matter Expert.

THESIS One of the main outcome of the MECR project has
been to produce a series of dissertations centered
around one main theme and one main vision to support
the future of NSU distance education programs:

	               * A Project Management and Control System Methodology
                         for the MECR Project.
	               * A Low Cost Video for Distance Education.
	               * Interactive features for an HTML tutorial in a
                         distance learning program.
	               * A Conferencing System utilizing Voice and Text Data
over a Low Bandwidth Communications link.

RESEARCH One of the great achievements of the MECR research
group has been to demonstrate the feasibility of
collaborative research in an online environment.

COURSES Another important outcome of the MECR research is
to provide a central theme for my doctoral class
                       on Client/Server computing.

ARTICLES Finally, the research will be the source of numerous
                       publications in the future.

                                 PORTFOLIO REVIEW

BACKGROUND The purpose of this portfolio is to provide evidence
of an exceptional scholarly, creative activity and
professional experience accumulated since I obtained
my Ph.D. in Physics (or more precisely, the Doctorat
d'Etat es Sciences Physiques, the highest degree
                       awarded by the French University).

CURRENT I was appointed to my current position as a full
POSITION professor of information systems in the center for
computer and information sciences at Nova university
effective July 1 1989. Dr John Scigliano, who was
Dean of the center, ends the nomination letter with:
"Dr Levin has performed in an outstanding manner as
a scholar and he should be given the highest faculty
status consistent with his qualifications and
                       experience".

FROM 1968 During these four years, I gathered expertise in
TO 1972 computer solutions of numerical algorithms and became
an expert on the Burroughs B6700 computer.

By 1972, I had achieved a unique professional
background, combining expertise as an engineer, able
to solve highly complex problems, with expert
knowledge of computer languages and applications.

BURROUGHS The next three years, I used my background as a
             AMSTERDAM highly trained scientist to:
                       * develop a simulation model for a large bank
                       * optimize a meteorological model using parallel
                         processing algorithms
                       * assist the faculty of the university of Eindhoven,
to solve their scientific problems on the computer.

BURROUGHS Based on the reputation I had built in Holland, I
DETROIT was transferred to Burroughs International division,
in Detroit, with the objective to provide worldwide
training support, visit key subsidiaries and assist
major customers. I was responsible for the worldwide
training on the Burroughs Scientific processor, a
                       16-processors machine.

BURROUGHS I was then transferred, along with 20 other computer
FLORIDA scientists, to Burroughs Coral Springs, Florida,
to rebuild computer applications in terms of objects.

It was at that time that Burroughs chairman received
a letter from Dr Ed Simco, proposing a collaboration
between Nova and computer industry professionals
in this area. I spent 1981 at Nova, on a leave of
                       absence from Burroughs.

                                 PORTFOLIO REVIEW (CONTINUE)

INTERNATL From 1982 to 1984, I operated my own company,
CUSTOMIZED International Customized Software (ICS), generating
SOFTWARE applications for the local industry. One of my
clients was the DOT. My main achievement was to
build an application generator, called Dynamatix.

CBL From 1984 to 1989, I helped Dr John Scigliano build
the Center for Computer Based Learning (CBL), working
on major projects (The ECR, the ES/ET systems), and
directing the DAIS, DATL and DIS doctoral programs.
At the same time, I generated many applications for
                       the university, using Dynamatix.

COMPUTER From 1989 to 1993, besides teaching computer
SCIENCE science courses, I lead two major activities:

                       * I animated a research group to develop distance
                         education tools
                       * I participated in the development of a MacIntosh
application to distance learning, in collaboration
with l'Ecole Polytechnique, the French engineering
school I graduated from, and Apple France.

SCIS Since 1993, I have devoted my time between two
                       activities:
                       * Develop online teaching tools and teach in the SCIS
                         online computer-based programs.
                       * Lead a research group on the Multimedia ECR project.
