Metamorphic Dynamic Defense in Depth (MDiD): A Paradigm of Dynamic Defense Through Random Temporal Vulnerability Variance

In this dissertation research, a new strategy in the deployment of network and system defenses termed Metamorphic Defense in Depth (MDiD) is explored. This concept, a form of dynamic defense, is created from the examination of the hacking and malicious code process and its dependencies on specific common conditions for success. The goal of MDiD is to present a changing metamorphic defense to the hacker’s reconnaissance and vulnerability exploitation attempts that it becomes problematic to ascertain the predictability and vulnerability exploitability of the target network. The OPNET Modeler network simulation application will be utilized to model a MDiD perimeter defense with simulation of specific attacks against the system. Data will be collected as to the effect of a MDiD defense as compared to a conventional static perimeter defense to ascertain if increased attempts are required for successful penetration.
